My Artist.
I have now fully decided on how i want my artist. My artist is female and will be called Beka. She will be follow the genre of Indie/Folk. I am now going to show some examples of similar artists and analyse them to show exactly what my ideas are.
Eliza Doolittle
Eliza Doolittle

I have decided to use this artist as one of the main inspirations for my artist. Eliza follows the genre of indie and pop folk. As my artist beka is going to be the same as this i want to use her style of clothing and her over all look when creating the photoshoots for my artist. Eliza dresses in bright colours and outfits that are not necesarily matching - this creates her own style and shows individuality, this then fits with the genre. Whilst researching her i have noticed also that some of her albums photoshoots and posters are quite '1950s Pop Art', i again think this is original and would like to use that style within my magazine.
Another artist that i have considered taking ideas and ispiration from is;

Paloma Faith

Paloma faith is an indie/folk/pop artist. She is very original and like no other. I have chosen to research her for mainly the style fashion aspect of it. As i inten on my artist being very original and out there i have taken some ideas from palomas style of make up and clothing ideas to do so. I particually like how she always wear bright colours, pale coloured skin and bright lipsticks and eye make up. I have also noticed how she wears pattenerned bright coloured clothing and also usually has a distinct hair peice or hat that is very wacky and eye catching. Tuesday, 7 December 2010

Magazine cover research
I have researched some magazines to show the different looks and types of front covers that you can have.
All of these magazine covers i have chosen are fashion and music based. They all caught my eye as they were bright coloured like i would want mine and also they have a women model as i am going to have. I think they are all interesting as they have some quirky fonts similar to the types i want to use, and also the women are very fashion looking based. I am using these front covers as inspiration for my front cover for my magazine.

Photography lighting training
For my photo shoot for my magazine front cover i will be using the white screen. This is because i would like them to be fashion shots and i will just be focusing on the main artist. For this reason i had my lighting training and experimented with taking pictures infront of the white screen so i would find this easy to do when i came to doing them myself and also to familiarise myself with using the cameras and lighting infront of the screen.
The photos that i took with the lighting to the left are quite basic photos as they were use for my pre-lim photos. Although when i do come to take my own photos on the white photography screen more colours and also props will be encorporated to make them more interesting and also to make them stand out more, i will also be using props in my photoshoots.
I found the photography lighting training quite simple. I learnt how to create different types of lighting and how to make a brighter and a dimmer photo by just adjusting the positions of the lights. I also learnt how to create shaddowed looks using the lighting. I found the photography session very good and thought it was a great help and interesting and will certainly benefit from it when i come to creating my own shots for my magazine front cover and article.

Pre-lim task.

To make myself familiar with in design i created a pre-lim task of a front cover. I took photos in my lighting training and used one of these for the cover photo. I then went to in design, chose some fonts that i though would be appropriate. The cover for this task was just a college magazine therefor it did not have to be very detailed as it would be quite basic. I used a range of different types of fonts to make some words stand out more than others and i used the range of colours to have the same effect. This front cover is not the best as it was done quite quickly but this was only to create an example and also it was just a first attempt.

If i looked through the top 40 and noticed that the type of genre of music i want to use was not on here then i would be likely to reconsider my ideas as the magazine i would be creating would not be successful as not many people would be intererested in buying it if the genre was not popular.

Indentified target audience.
My identified target audience is going to be girls. I think that this will work better as girls are more likely to go out to buy a magazine on a daily basis. Also as i have incorporated fashion into it i think that it is more likely to interest girls, although it could interest a small group of males. To fully indentify my target audience i am going to use GRASS. Grass stands for:
G-Gender, Female/Male
R-Race, Caucasian
A-Age,14/25
SS-Soicial economic status- Lower class, Lower working class,Unemployed.
I have chosen female initially for the gender of my target audience because on a whole i just think it has more chance to sell aimed at them, they are the most interested in fashion and find it the most interesting, women also tend to be more interested in women artists than the males are.. Although i have put male aswell because there could be a small group of men interested for the fashion or because of the 'female gaze' alot of men will be interested due to what they are looking at on the front cover, which is usually a woman. I chose the race to be caucasian, this is mainly because i think that they will be more familiar with that type of music and that style, i do think it could apply to certain mixed race people although i think you enjoy something the more familiar with it that you are. The age for my target audience is 14/25, i think around this time women are most focused on fashion and bothered about it, 14 is young but i think it is the prime time in a girls life where they start to become interested in fashion make up and music and they start to aspire to be like 'Pop stars and Artists'. I chose my social economic status to be the lower class/lower working class/unemployed, this is mainly becuase it is usually the unemployed, students that are most interested in reading magazines while they are bored and also for something to do at home, i also put the lower and lower working class because it could interest them aswell, even though i have not put it it could interest some of the working class, but not initially as they will not have as much time on their hands.
I am going to produce an audience questionaire to see what type of people and who read music/fashion magazines.

Initial ideas for the project.
I initially want my music magazine to be combined with fashion. Although i think this will make it appear to a smaller target audience i think that it will work really well for the female audience and it will gain more popularity from this. I want it to be a indie/pop style of music magazine and contain clothes/accesories and fashion ideas of this specific type aswell. I want the front cover theme to be sort of a 1950's look fashion wise and i want it to be very quirky and not like any other music magazine out there. The artist i am planning on creating with be one of a similar style to 'Paloma Faith' and 'Eliza Doolittle'. I have come up with a rough name for my artist, Beka. I am going to be shopping with my initial artist for clothing of this type. The sort of front cover i am hoping to create is one of the same ideas of the ones below.

The first two magazine covers are actually music magazines, although the last is fashion but also focuses on some elements of music. Although it does give a rough idea of the sort of front cover look i am wanting to have. My favourite stye of cover is the second as it is quirky and different with the style of 1950's pop, this is the way i am hoping for mine to look.
